Later this month, Joburg Ballet will present Ballet Above Braam – Rooftop Sunset Sessions, a series of performances bringing dance into the heart of Johannesburg’s inner city. Supported by the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), the initiative takes place on the rooftop of the PlayBraam building in Braamfontein, offering audiences an open-air experience against the city skyline at sunset.
Two performances are scheduled for 27 and 28 March, combining classical, neoclassical and contemporary works in a programme designed to introduce ballet to new audiences. The selection includes excerpts from Sleeping Beauty and Giselle, alongside works by emerging and established choreographers, reflecting the range of contemporary ballet practice.
Conceived as an accessible and informal setting, the project aims to reach younger audiences and inner-city residents who may not typically attend performances in traditional theatres. A pre-show “Meet the Artists” session will also offer audiences the opportunity to engage directly with dancers and choreographers and gain insight into the creative process.
Presented by Joburg Ballet in association with PlayBraam, the Rooftop Sunset Sessions are envisioned as a pilot initiative, with the potential to develop into a recurring cultural event in Johannesburg.
