On Tuesday, 14 October 2025, the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) launched its 30th anniversary publication and accompanying photo exhibition at Dibukafé in Braamfontein, marking three decades of cultural collaboration, dialogue, and creativity between France and South Africa. The evening brought together artists, partners, and the Friends of IFAS to celebrate thirty years of artistic exchange and innovation.
Guests were welcomed with music, refreshments, and the opportunity to explore the photo series Cultural Crossings by the Youth Content Collective, introduced by Sibusiso Zulu. The exhibition captures moments of movement, connection, and creative expression that reflect the shared stories of France and South Africa over the past three decades. The 15 photographs in the series were taken by Tshegofatso Rakwena, Dimakatso Lebelo, Khaya Malinga, Andile Biyela, and Dean Ndlovu.
The formal programme opened with remarks from Ambassador David Martinon, who officially launched the publication — a tribute to IFAS’s thirty-year journey of fostering artistic collaboration, cultural dialogue, and creative experimentation. In his speech, the Ambassador reflected on the Institute’s evolving role in supporting artists, researchers, and cultural practitioners, and reaffirmed the importance of continued exchange between the two nations.
The evening continued with a live performance by the Windybrow Arts Centre, presenting an extract from Notebook of a Long Day’s Journey into a Hillbrow Night. Through its powerful narrative and evocative staging, the performance captured the essence of Johannesburg’s urban energy and the interwoven cultural identities that define it.
The Cultural Crossings photo exhibition remains on display at Dibukafé (70 Juta Street) for one month. Dibukafé opening hours:

- Thursday: 09:30 – 19:00
- Friday and Saturday: 09:30 – 14:00
- Monday, Sunday, and public holidays: Closed
