Acts of Care, one of six immersive works developed through Futures_Past: Amplifying Memory with Immersive Technologies, will open at Latitudes Centre for the Arts in Johannesburg this September. Drawing on the archive of the Township AIDS Project (TAP), the exhibition considers how histories of care and collective action can inform the present.
Produced by Two Name Games with GALA Queer Archive, the exhibition showcases the TAP archive as a living space of memory, witness and participation. It asks what the care practices of the 1990s can teach society today, particularly about community organising, mutual support and the responsibility to preserve histories that may otherwise receive limited public attention.
The exhibition is structured around three stations: Witness, Recognise and Act. The first station allows visitors to engage with the past and its records of care through virtual reality. In the second one, augmented reality connects these histories to the present visitor. While projection and participatory art invite the audience to consider how acts of care can be carried forward in the third station. Public activations and visitor contributions will also add to the archive throughout the exhibition period. These contributions can be viewed through the Acts of Care online archive, which continues to document responses shared by visitors.
Acts of Care also honours the late Tiisetso Dladla and Jordan Green, two members of the project team whose creative work and contribution remain part of the exhibition.

This is the first exhibition opening as part of Futures_Past. Futures_Past is a two-year regional programme initiated by the Embassy of France in South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), implemented in partnership with Electric South and funded by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
Across the three countries, the programme brings creative practitioners and archival institutions together to create new public encounters with historical collections. Through virtual and augmented reality, spatial audio, interactive installations and projection mapping, the six participating teams are developing works that make archival material accessible in new forms. The programme also includes research on the immersive arts sector in Southern Africa and professional exchanges between practitioners from the region and France.
