More than a century after his birth, Frantz Fanon remains one of the most influential and widely debated thinkers of the twentieth century. His writings continue to shape conversations on colonialism, race, violence, liberation and decolonisation, offering perspectives that remain relevant in societies around the world.
The French Embassy and French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) invites the public to The Legacy of Frantz Fanon, an evening panel discussion exploring the continued significance of his work in contemporary political, social and intellectual life. Bringing together scholars from different disciplines and areas of expertise, the discussion will examine how Fanon’s ideas continue to inform debates in South Africa and internationally.
The panel will feature Prof Ronit Frenkel, Prof Lucy Graham, Dr Dimpho Maponya and Dr Brian Sibanda, all from the University of Johannesburg. The discussion will be moderated by Mr Bafana Radebe of the University of South Africa.
Together, the panellists will reflect on the enduring relevance of Fanon’s work, considering its contribution to current conversations on identity, inequality, social justice and decolonisation. Representing a range of perspectives, the discussion aims to encourage thoughtful dialogue and audience engagement.
The event forms part of IFAS’s commitment to creating spaces for public discussion on ideas that continue to shape cultural and social life in South Africa and beyond.
