Fête de la Musique returns to Johannesburg and Pretoria in June 2026

Arts and Creative Industries

Created in France in 1982, Fête de la Musique is now celebrated in more than 120 countries. Its guiding principle is simple: free music for all. Open to musicians of all levels and to audiences of every age, the festival encourages live performance in public space and makes music accessible beyond conventional venues.

In June 2026, Fête de la Musique will once again take place in Pretoria and Johannesburg with two free public events celebrating live music across the city.

The Alliance Française of Pretoria will host a Pretoria edition of Fête de la Musique on Saturday, 13 June 2026, from 3pm to 6pm.

One week later, the festival will return to Victoria Yards in Johannesburg on Saturday, 20 June 2026, from 1pm to 7pm. Marking its 15th edition in the city, the Johannesburg event has become a recognised fixture on the city’s cultural calendar while remaining faithful to the original French concept: creating a platform for amateur musicians alongside established artists.

Since its introduction to Johannesburg 15 years ago, Fête de la Musique has presented a wide range of artists reflecting the diversity of South Africa’s contemporary music scene. Previous editions have featured Msaki, BCUC, Samthing Soweto, Vaudou Game, Nakhane, SunEl Musician and Bongeziwe Mabandla, among others.

Alongside its live music programme, the festival continues to encourage artistic exchange and public participation through accessible cultural events held in shared public spaces.

The 2026 Johannesburg edition is organised by the French Institute of South Africa and co-produced by Bassline, with the support of TotalEnergies Marketing South Africa.

The full programme and artist line-up will be announced soon. Entrance is free.
