Ballet Above Braam brings dance to the city skyline

Arts and Creative Industries

Ballet Above Braam – Rooftop Sunset Sessions transformed the rooftop of the PlayBraam building into an open-air stage in the heart of Johannesburg. Supported by the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), the initiative offered audiences an opportunity to experience ballet in a setting that rethought how and where dance can be presented.

Set against the inner city skyline at sunset, the performances brought together classical, neoclassical and contemporary works in a concise programme. Excerpts from Sleeping Beauty and Giselle were presented alongside pieces by both emerging and established choreographers, reflecting the breadth of the company’s repertoire.

Presented by Joburg Ballet in association with PlayBraam, the Rooftop Sunset Sessions marked a first edition of what is intended as a recurring initiative, contributing to ongoing efforts to expand access to dance within the urban environment.
