Threads of Solidarity exhibition opens at Freedom Park

Governance and Human Rights

On 1 December, the Delegation of the European Union to South Africa, together with embassies of EU Member States, opened the exhibition Threads of Solidarity: European Support for the Struggle Against Apartheid at Freedom Park. The exhibition traces the many ways in which European institutions, civil society organisations and individuals supported the South African struggle against apartheid.

The exhibition was officially opened by the Ambassador of the European Union to South Africa, Sandra Kramer, and the Director-General of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Zane Dangor, in the presence of representatives from the diplomatic community, South African institutions and civil society.

The French Embassy was represented by Ambassador David Martinon, Head of Cooperation Jean Spiri, Attaché for Development Cooperation Cecelia Kok, and Political Counsellor Alexandre Brochard, reflecting France’s continued commitment to dialogue on historical memory, human rights and democratic values.

Threads of Solidarity is on view at Freedom Park until March 2026. Thereafter, the exhibition is expected to tour other sites in South Africa, widening access to this important account of European support during a defining period in the country’s history.
