Throughout June and July, Dibukafé continued to provide a space for dialogue and cultural exchange, hosting public conversations that explored literature, heritage, restitution and journalism.
On 18 June, the Embassy of France in South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) hosted Restitution: Community Reappropriations and New Narratives. Bringing together Ben Myres (Nyamakop), Molemo Moiloa (Open Restitution Africa), Dr Motsane Seabela (DITSONG National Museum of Cultural History) and moderator Youlandree Appasamy, the discussion examined contemporary approaches to restitution, community ownership and the role of creative practitioners in shaping new narratives around cultural heritage. Guests also experienced Relooted, Nyamakop’s award-winning video game exploring restitution through interactive storytelling.
On 25 June, Dibukafé welcomed members of the National Press Club for a discussion with Jeff Wicks, the 2025 NPC-UNISA Overall Journalist of the Year. Wicks reflected on the investigations that earned him the award.
On 9 July, IFAS and the K. Sello Duiker Literary Foundation presented Writing the Unspoken: Celebrating the Legacy of Sello K. Duiker. Readings from The Quiet Violence of Dreams in English and French were followed by a discussion with Professor Siphiwo Mahala, Kamo Duiker and Jean Spiri, moderated by Dr Danyela Demir, reflecting on the enduring relevance of Duiker’s writing and its engagement with mental health, masculinity, sexuality, spirituality and social transformation.
