The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the French National Research Centre (CNRS) founded the IFAS-Research in 1995 to promote scientific investigations in human and social sciences in 12 southern-African countries. It encourages and subsidises collective and individual scientific projects in geography, history, anthropology, archaeology, political science etc.

IFAS-Research‘s regional mandate is not limited to the South African Republic, but also covers 12 countries in southern and central Africa (South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Republic of the Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe). Since its inception, the Institute has developed 3 main domains of expertise: paleosciences ; history, art history and heritage ; social and political dynamics in contemporary African societies.
