Education

A French festival was held at La Rochelle Girls’ High School in Paarl on August 22 2015. M. Frans Botha, Head of the languages department and French teacher, initiated the project with the support of the Principal, Mrs Amanda Lochner.

The festival took place from 8.30am to 1.30pm and gathered over 100 pupils (Grade 10 to Grade 12) from 11 secondary schools in the Western Cape Province. The pupils participated in workshops presented by 12 teachers and trainers from universities and schools. The Alliance Française of Stellenbosch was also present.

The schools represented were: La Rochelle Girls’ High School, Rhenish Girls’ High School, Hoer Meisieskool Bloemhof, Paul Roos Gimnasium, Herschel School for Girls, Reddam House Atlantic Seaboard, French Studio, Paarl Girls’ High School, Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys’ High School.

The festival program was rich, varied and innovative: theatrical performances, film analysis, discovery of the new French music scene, but also preparation for the final written test of the matric pupils, grammar revision and a cultural quiz.

The Embassy of France supported the event, and Cooperation Attaché for French, Mr Damien Guyard, responded positively to the invitation of Ms. Lochner and opened the festival with her.
