As our links with the rest of Africa and other French-speaking countries increase, so does the need for French-speaking professionals in various fields. We help those wanting to learn and those teaching French as a foreign language in South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi. The French Institute also offers internships, scholarships, further training grants and even educational resources and literature.

Agreement between DBE and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Department of education and the French language of the French Embassy in South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi is involved in Basic Education projects, following the signature of a bilateral agreement between the French Ministry of Education and Youth and the South African Department of Basic Education. This agreement, signed in Pretoria in February 2019, by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs Mr Le Drian and Mrs Sisulu strengthens the basic education cooperation in the fields of school leadership and governance, curriculum, vocational education, teaching of sciences, maths and technology, the teaching of French and nutrition education. The fight against bullying and cyberbullying and discrimination related to gender and sexual orientation has been added to the action plan by the Ministers of education after a meeting they had in March 2019. A delegation of 8 officials from the Department of Basic Education visited France in December 2019, in order to meet French partners and exchange expertise with their counterparts, in partnership with France Education International. Another visit is scheduled for June 2022.
