Wrapping up the (In)Visible tour in Southern Africa

Arts and Creative Industries

From October to November 2025, the contemporary dance work (In)Visible toured South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique, following performances at the Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (FATC) in Mpumalanga, Maitisong in Gaborone, POPArt in Johannesburg, and finally KINANI in Maputo.

Choreographed by Mozambican artist Janeth Mulapha, in collaboration with South African scenographer Jenni-Lee Crewe and dancers from FATC, the work grew out of a residency at the Ebhudlweni Arts Centre and continued to evolve over the course of the regional tour.

(In)Visible was shaped through Mulapha’s engagement with people in Mozambique who experienced sudden blindness. Through a series of intimate vignettes, the performers moved between hope and uncertainty, addressing sight and its loss, and reflecting on identity, age, injury and disability.

The work premiered at the National Arts Festival in 2024 as part of Third Space, a pan-African dance platform developed by the National Arts Festival and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), supported by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
