Writing the Unspoken: Celebrating the Legacy of Sello K. Duiker

Arts and Creative Industries

The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and the K. Sello Duiker Literary Foundation, are hosting Writing the Unspoken: Celebrating the Legacy of Sello K. Duiker, an evening at Dibukafé dedicated to an influential South African literary voice.

More than two decades after the publication of The Quiet Violence of Dreams, Duiker’s work continues to shape conversations around mental health, masculinity, sexuality, spirituality, urban life and social transformation. His writing challenged readers to engage with realities that were often overlooked or difficult to discuss, and many of the questions he raised remain relevant today.

The programme will open with readings from The Quiet Violence of Dreams in both English and French, highlighting the continued reach and significance of Duiker’s work across languages and contexts. These readings will be followed by a panel discussion exploring the contemporary relevance of his writing in South Africa and beyond.

Moderated by Dr. Danyela Demir of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the discussion will bring together Jean Spiri, Director of the French Institute of South Africa and Head of Cooperation and Cultural Action at the French Embassy in South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi; Professor Siphiwo Mahala of the University of Johannesburg; and Kamo Duiker of the K. Sello Duiker Literary Foundation.

– Date: Thursday, 9 July 2026
– Time: 5pm
– Venue: Dibukafé, 70 Juta Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg
