Primary school children play rugby at the Emirates Park Stadium

Governance and Human Rights

On 27 September 2018 was organized the Try-It Rugby Get Ahead Sports Programme at the Emirates Park Stadium, in Johannesburg.

This event is part of the Project (Play it!), which was launched in four ordinary public primary schools located close to the Central Business District of Johannesburg. The beneficiaries are children in Grade 7 who are attending these non-fee paying schools.

Currently, near 400 children are exposed to a weekly dose of this intervention. The team game challenges develop precious skills as communication, time management, cooperation and leadership. At the same time, it engages all players in a wide range of behavioral management learnings. The programme is gender indiscriminate and fully inclusive.

30 learners of these schools participated in the Get Ahead Sports Programme and played rugby. Ten players from 34 schools in the greater Johannesburg area (including schools located in Soweto) have also been invited to participate in a talent transitioning opportunity, which the Achieve-It! Charitable Trust organized with the Lions Rugby Union. The purpose is to transition the most talented players and advance them into organized age-group, sport development networks, within the region.
