The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and IFAS-Research recently welcomed selected students from the Wits School of Arts for presentations marking an important stage in a collaborative training programme focused on heritage and museum practice.
Open to fourth-year and Honours students in Fine Arts, Curatorial Practice, Interdisciplinary Arts and Culture Studies, and Digital Arts, the short-term programme complements the students’ year-long research projects with training on current approaches to heritage, museums and digital technologies.
Seminars covered the future of museums, photogrammetric techniques and digital archiving, digital interventions at heritage sites, and access to digital heritage and collections. The student presentations provided an opportunity to share work in progress and reflect on how these approaches can inform their continuing research.
The programme brings together IFAS’s work in cultural cooperation with IFAS-Research’s scientific and academic activities, while strengthening exchange between French and South African cultural, research and higher education networks.
