South Africa strengthens its animation industry at Annecy 2026

Arts and Creative Industries

Animation South Africa (ASA), in partnership with IFAS, the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), led a delegation of more than 34 South African animation producers to the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market (MIFA), the world’s leading marketplace for the animation industry.

The South African Pavilion served as a dedicated business hub throughout MIFA, providing local studios and producers with a professional space to meet international broadcasters, distributors, investors and potential co-production partners. It also showcased the 2026 South African Projects in Development and company directory booklet, highlighting local intellectual property, creative talent and production expertise to a global audience.

A highlight of this year’s programme was a trilateral networking session, at the South African Pavilion, bringing together South African, Brazilian and French creators and studios to explore new opportunities for international collaboration and co-production.

As part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening ties between the French and South African audiovisual sectors, IFAS supported the participation of Marthinus van Rooyen, Art Director at Mollo Animation Studio & Academy. His participation expanded professional networks while enabling him to deliver in person animation and visual storytelling training as part of the Gobelins Summer School programme in Paris, where he has contributed online since 2020.
