Fahla Fahla! comes together as an extension of Occupying The Gallery’s residency with IFAS – Institut Français d’Afrique du Sud. This iteration is a collaborative workshop led by visual artist, Hugues Anhēs, and independent exhibition coordinator and curator, Camille Gajate, joining us from Paris, France, through the support of IFAS and Institut français in Paris.
Mary Sibande and Lawrence Lemaoana, are again, joined by seven artists for this venture: Bongani Ndlovu, Hoek Swaratlhe, Lungile Ngcobo, Mlondi Magubane, Mosa Anita Kaiser, Sphatho Mzantsi and Tatenda Magaisa.
Fahla Fahla!, is a colloquialism of the act of putting together, a touch, touch here and there, in bits and pieces. A drop of something short and sweet: adding and subtracting when needed to make a whole.
For the workshop, the artists of Occupying The Gallery are encouraged to work more collaboratively to produce a final artwork that manifests as a mural outside the IFAS building in Braamfontein, and a zine that will act as a tangible remainder of the workshop. The mural and zine production is the first time the artists are working on one visual and textual output together, instead of producing individual works.
This collaborative process is to encourage the artists to familiarise themselves with each other’s individual practices, learn new methods of creating, and to engage in discussion. For most of the artists, it is also an introduction to an art practice that has value outside of profit. With a focus on play, research, exchange, discussion and organic processes.
Join us for the public showcase of the mural and project outcomes!
