Frames of hope: Thokoza’s teenage filmmakers make history.

Arts and Creative Industries

Young filmmakers from Thokoza, a township located in the City of Ekurhuleni, in Gauteng province, will be representing South Africa on a global stage at a festival in Lisbon, Portugal.

The festival, known as Cinéma cent ans de jeunesse, presents a significant milestone, as it marks the first time South Africa has been invited since the program was launched in 1995. In addition, South Africa is the first African country to receive an invitation.  From the 3rd to the 7th of June, young people aged 7 to 18 years old from 20 countries will take part in this festival.

The selected filmmakers from Thokoza are part of a project called  Cinema TAKE, The Alternative Kinetic Experience, aimed at promoting cinema in the city of Johannesburg, and utilizing cinema as an educational tool. The project was created by Muriel Huet, Emillie Demon, and  Mpumelelo Mcata.

Cinema TAKE, has partnered with The French Institute of South Africa, and Of Soul and Joy, to implement the Cinéma cent ans de jeunesse project. The young filmmakers were taught essential skills such as operating a camera, shooting videos, and telling a story.
