Power and the People: Photojournalism exhibition opens at Dibukafé

Arts and Creative Industries

On 15 April 2026, the exhibition Power and the People: Two Sides, One Country opened at Dibukafé, the multimedia library of the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), in partnership with the National Press Club. The opening brought together photographers, media professionals and members of the public for an evening of exchange centred on contemporary photojournalism.

The exhibition, on view until 15 May, presents the work of a diverse group of South African photojournalists documenting the country’s political and social landscape in recent years. Through images capturing both centres of power and everyday lived realities, the exhibition reflects on the tensions and connections between leadership and grassroots experience.

Photographers featured include Alaister Russell, Alet Pretorius, Armand Hough, Deaan Vivier, Deon Raath, Elizabeth Sejake, Felix Dlangamandla, Jaco Marais, Melinda Stuurman, Phill Magakoe, Sandile Ndlovu, Sharon Seretlo and Siyamazi Khathola. Their work spans urban and rural contexts, offering perspectives on issues ranging from governance and public policy to community resilience and social change.

The opening event also included a networking session and discussion on the challenges faced by photojournalists today, highlighting questions of access, representation and working conditions in the field.

Dibukafé is located at 70 Juta Street in Braamfontein. Operating hours:
