On Wednesday, 11 March, the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg will co-host a discussion titled Johannesburg as Imaginarium: Public Art and Placemaking in the City.
The conversation will consider how Johannesburg is imagined, shaped and experienced through public art, cultural initiatives and urban design. Panelists will reflect on their work in the city, the role of artists and cultural practitioners in public space, and the possibilities and limits of placemaking in a context marked by inequality, mobility and rapid change.
The panel brings together artist Stephen Hobbs, researcher, writer and visual artist Kim Gurney, creative practitioner Malose Malahlela, and architect and researcher Thireshen Govender. The discussion will be moderated by researcher, curator and writer Anthea Buys.
The event will take place from 18:00 to 21:00 at the Goethe-Institut Auditorium, 119 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood. Entrance is free and the event is open to the public.
