IFAS x FNB Art Joburg presents CONSTRUCT

The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and FNB Art Joburg are delighted to present CONSTRUCT: five women artists working in Joburg across non-traditional mediums, a video series in five parts.

Moderated by Nzinga Qunta, CONSTRUCT profiles artists Senzeni Marasela, Lunga Ntila, Anastasia Pather, Usha Seerajim and Vanessa Tembane – all working in Joburg across non-traditional mediums and techniques. Just as “construct” may refer to the physical act of building or making, a construct can also refer to a concept, one formulated without empirical evidence that therefore does not necessarily reflect the lived reality.

In this way, the series explores both the physical practice of each artist how Anastasia Pather builds layers of paint and material on her canvas, what materials Lunga Ntila intends on bringing into her collage practice as well as the identity and gender constructs they each navigate through their work. For the CONSTRUCT series, Qunta asks each artist, “to what degree can you operate simply as an ‘artist’ rather than a “female artist’?” and more pointedly “, is it your responsibility to assume the voice of a “female artist’?

CONSTRUCT is presented at Johannesburg Art Gallery, October 2021 in conjunction with FNB Art Joburg’s inaugural edition of Open City, the series forms part of IFAS’ objectives of supporting women artists as seen in some of our recent cultural projects including; Poetry Africa, Fête de la Musique, and our ongoing collaboration with the Kwasha Theatre Company.

CONSTRUCT will be screeded at NuMetro Theatres in Hyde Park during these times and dates:

Friday 29 Oct (7pm)
Saturday 30 Oct (2pm and 6pm)
Sunday 31 Oct (2pm and 6pm)
