Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto winner Bulumko Mbete’s work exhibited in Kimberley

Arts and Creative Industries

Experience Like the sky I’ve been too quiet, a solo exhibition by Bulumko Mbete, winner of the 2023 Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award. On show at William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley, the exhibition retraces her grandfather’s 1997 road trip across South Africa, weaving together history, family, and reflection through four immersive installations.

Combining handmade sculptures, beadwork, and naturally dyed fabrics, Mbete explores themes of inheritance, silence, and remembrance, inviting visitors into a meditative space of personal and collective memory.

The Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award is supported by the Embassy of France in South Africa, the French Institute of South Africa, Absa South Africa, and The South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA), in a partnership that spans 21 years.

The exhibition is open until 13 September 2025.
