2025 Cassirer Welz Award celebrates emerging African talent with Smiso Cele as laureate

Arts and Creative Industries

The Cassirer Welz Award, instituted in 2011 by Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer in honour of her husband Reinhold Cassirer’s affinity for the arts, remains a distinguished platform recognising emerging artistic talent across South Africa and the Sub-Saharan region. Following the passing of Stephan Welz, co-founder and managing director of Strauss & Co, the award adopted its present name in tribute to both individuals’ contributions to South African cultural life. Over the last 15 years, the award, sponsored by Strauss & Co, has provided early-career artists with a transformative three-month residency at the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, culminating in a solo exhibition.

The 2025 awards round saw a competitive shortlisting of five artists: Smiso Cele, Fiona Davhana, Ditiro Mashigo, Swaline Mkhonto (all South African), and Chidimma Nwafor (Nigeria). The award was conferred upon Smiso Cele, who will undertake a three-month residency at the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, concluding in a solo exhibition.

The 2025 Award was realised through ongoing support from Strauss & Co, with additional funding provided by the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS).

“For the French Institute of South Africa, supporting the 15th edition of the Cassirer Welz Award reflects our wider mission to nurture cultural exchange and creative talent. The award aligns with our own goal to provide emerging African artists with a platform for mentorship, growth, and meaningful engagement with the wider industry,” said Dorine Lebreton, Cultural Attaché and Deputy Director of IFAS.
