Poetry, exhibitions and discussions:
In August, Dibukafé hosted three events: a poetry reading with Zama Madinana, who presented works from his new collection Freedom Songs and Interludes, on 7 August, a lecture by French historian Tal Bruttmann on The Auschwitz Album: How the Nazis Photographed Their Crimes on 13 August, and the opening of Painting with Light, a street photography exhibition by Thato Setagane on 14 August 2025.
Film screening:
On 11 September at 17:30, the French Embassy and IFAS will host Truth Be Told – Prisoner in My Mind, directed by Enver Samuel. This fifth episode in Samuel’s series revisits apartheid-era atrocities and the legacy of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The film recounts the killing of Richard and Irene Motasi by a security police hit squad in 1987, and the survival of their son Tshidiso, who continues to confront the trauma of that night. The Hawks are currently investigating the case. The screening at Dibukafé will be followed by a Q&A with the director. Entry is free, RSVP here.
Campus France Corner:
Dibukafé also hosts the Campus France Corner, with regular #WalkInWednesdays. These sessions provide practical guidance for students interested in studying in France, covering applications, visas and academic opportunities. Visitors are encouraged to bring their questions, study in the library, or spend time reading. The next session takes place on Wednesday 27 August from 10am to 3pm.
The Living Library is intended as an open and participatory space. Individuals or organisations wishing to host events at Dibukafé are invited to contact culture@frenchinstitute.org.za.
Dibuka pop-ups in Morningside are back! Every Friday in September, Dibuka will hold pop-ups at Lycée Jules Verne in Morningside, making the library collection accessible to Dibuka members, school pupils and their families.
