Joburg French Cine Club returns with Truffaut’s Le Dernier métro at The Bioscope

Arts and Creative Industries

The Alliance Française of Johannesburg, in partnership with the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and The Bioscope Independent Cinema, are bringing French and francophone cinema to local audiences through the monthly Joburg French Cine Club (JFCC).

Marking its 2025 return, JFCC presents François Truffaut’s Le Dernier métro (1980) on Thursday 11 September 2025 at 19:30. Set in Nazi-occupied Paris, this classic of French cinema follows a theatre troupe navigating censorship and persecution while secretly protecting their Jewish director. The film combines historical drama with Truffaut’s distinctive New Wave sensibility. Watch the trailer here.

Audiences are invited to join from 19:00, with a ticket price of R100 including a complimentary glass of wine. Screenings are organised with the support of IF Cinema / Institut Français. All foreign-language films screened at The Bioscope include English subtitles.

Looking ahead, the programme will continue on Thursday 9 October with Un métier sérieux by Thomas Lilti. Watch the trailer here.

For more information and the full programme of upcoming screenings, keep an eye on The Bioscope’s website.
