Cinema TAKE to premiere short film Thando! at Delta Park Theatre in Johannesburg

Arts and Creative Industries

On 1 October, the Delta Park Theatre in Emmarentia, Johannesburg, will host the South African premiere of THANDO!, the latest short film by young directors from Cinema TAKE, produced with the support of Windybrow Arts Centre actors.

The 10-minute film is a haunting exploration of ambition, loyalty and the tension between individual ego and collective identity. It tells the story of NoSizwe, a young actress in pursuit of fame who distances herself from her friend Thando and defies her theatre group. Her rejection of community sets in motion a chain of unsettling events, forming a symbolic fable about identity and the psychological cost of ambition.

THANDO! has already travelled internationally, with young filmmakers Katiso Mthembu, Athenkosi Masikwana and Anele Gamane presenting the work at the International Youth Film Festival, Le Cinéma, cent ans de jeunesse (CCAJ), in Paris in June 2025. This marked their return to the festival after making history the previous year as the first South Africans to participate, with support from the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS). Their film was praised for its artistic strength, while the trio impressed audiences with their thoughtful presentations and exchanges during the programme.

The Johannesburg screening will be hosted by the cast, directors and Cinema TAKE team, and forms part of the wider effort to promote youth creativity in Thokoza and Hillbrow. Cinema TAKE is a collaborative project with Of Soul & Joy (OSJ), supported by Rubis Mécénat.

Time: 17:00 – 20:00
