Spaces of Culture: Immersive African storytelling at the Wits Digital Dome

Arts and Creative Industries

As part of the Spaces of Culture initiative, Tshimologong is presenting a year-long public programme at the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome. The programme brings together immersive works that explore storytelling, technology and environmental awareness, and includes screenings of Kwasukasukela (“In the Beginning”), co-produced with the French Institute of South Africa.

Presented in dome format for the first time in South Africa, Kwasukasukela by Inka Kendzia and Xabiso Vili combines poetry, animation, artificial intelligence and mythology in a 360° environment. The work reflects on origins, memory and ancestral knowledge, offering audiences an immersive experience rooted in African narratives and contemporary digital practice.

The screening is followed by four immersive films that engage with conservation and environmental futures. Eden’s Garden considers a world reshaped by climate collapse. A Predicament of Pangolins follows two pangolins navigating survival. Dehorning a Rhino documents efforts to protect rhinos on the front line of conservation. Bazaruto takes audiences on an underwater journey along the Mozambican coast.

The programme is designed to be accessible to first-time dome audiences and suitable for families, inviting new publics to experience immersive African storytelling.

Upcoming public screenings of Kwasukasukela take place on Saturday 21 February 2026 at 14:00, Saturday 7 March 2026 at 14:00, and Sunday 22 March 2026 at 11:00. Parking at the venue is free and secure.

Tickets are available via Webtickets.
