CinemaTake youth debut documentary in Thokoza community

Arts and Creative Industries

Wrapping up on the 2024 training programme, on 15 February 2025, CinemaTake hosted a remarkable celebration in Thokoza, offering young filmmakers a platform to present their first documentary short film, Kasi Lama Kasi, to their community. The event was filled with pride, emotion, and a palpable sense of achievement as families gathered to support the talented youth.

What makes CinemaTake’s programme so special for the young people of Thokoza is its profound and lasting impact. The initiative is transforming the lives of these filmmakers, and as it expands to include new collaborations with other youth programmes across Johannesburg, its influence will only continue to grow.

Now, CinemaTake is guiding these filmmakers through the process of creating their next project—a short fiction film—which will be showcased at the International Youth Film Festival (Cinéma, Cent Ans de Jeunesse – CCAJ) in Paris, France, this June. Last year, 2 young filmmakers from the programme proudly represented South Africa at the CCAJ festival in Lisbon, Portugal, marking the country’s first invitation since the festival’s inception in 1995.

CinemaTake: The Alternative Kinetic Experience, co-founded by Emilie Demon, Muriel Huet, and Mpumelelo Mcata, continues to be a trailblazer, using cinema as an educational tool to empower youth in Thokoza.
