Travelling Exhibition – Kubuni: Comics from Africa

Have you seen the travelling exhibition Kubuni: Comics from Africa?

The Kubuni: Comics from Africa exhibition is a roadmap dedicated to the discovery of comics from sub-Saharan Africa through three focal points: the past, present and future.

Presented in partnership with the French Institute and the Alliances Française network in Southern Africa, “Kubuni” which means “imaginary creation” in Swahili takes you on a journey of discovery of comics whose stories take place in Africa, made by authors from sub-Saharan Africa and the diaspora. Before its presentation in Johannesburg, the exhibition was in Gaborone, Botswana.

As much a feast for the eyes, as it is for the mind, the Kubuni exhibition is accompanied by a selection of comic books. So after seeing the exhibition in the Gerard Sekoto Gallery, visit our Dibuka Multimedia Francophone Library to see the comics that have been made available, for on-site reading for the duration of the exhibition.

The exhibition presents works that draw their inspiration from ancient traditions, but also from more recent cultures. The comics exhibited were conceptualised and distributed in the West and on the African continent, emphasising the global nature of the context in which they are set.

The exhibition will be shown at the Alliance Française of Johannesburg’s Gerard Sekoto Gallery from the 16th of September until the 21st of October 2023. The opening times are Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. We look forward to seeing you there.
