The French Institute of South Africa is seeking to appoint a project manager for its Audiovisual Department : Cinema, TV & New Media. The position is based in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, South Africa.
The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) is a financially autonomous institution attached to the French Embassy in South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi. It organises with local partners more than 70 events per year in its different sectors of expertise: visual arts, audiovisual, performing arts, debates on ideas, fashion, architecture, gastronomy, etc. The program is implemented under the authority of the IFAS director by the teams of the Culture and Audiovisual departments, who manage the projects and monitor the budgets by sector. The various departments work closely with the communication department for the promotion of projects/events and with the IFAS General Secretary for the administrative and budgetary aspects.
IFAS, through its audiovisual department, is deploying a programming aimed at positioning France and its key players in the creative industries as partners of South-African innovation and creativity in the digital age. It is built around 4 priority programs:
• Supporting emerging talents, start-ups in South-Africa and creators of innovative content.
• Building projects with local partners : private and public stakeholders, incubators, festivals, schools and universities, …
• The valuation of French expertise in the audiovisual industries: exchanges of best practices, scouting missions in France and in South Africa, cooperation agreements, …
• Audience development and access to creations.
This policy is part of the promotion of the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI), a priority of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs. The audiovisual department particularly focuses on the following fields: cinema, television, video game, digital arts, immersive experience (VR, XR), podcast, audiovisual archives and media.
The Audiovisual department of IFAS has been working with multiple public and private partners in South Africa. With every one of them, we develop a unique collaboration with the shared goal of making the exchanges between France and South Africa within creative industries more rewarding, complementing, dynamic, innovative, creative, and ambitious.
Reporting to the audiovisual attachée, the project manager implements the strategy of the department. He/she also contributes to the development of new projects and ensures the relation with our partners.
Summary of duties
-Coordinating the different aspects of audiovisual projects: partnerships, administration, logistic, and budgeting.
– Writing and managing the agreements with the partners, sponsors and technical suppliers
– Following the execution of the agreements including payments and reports in conjunction with IFAS General Secretary and accounting department
– Managing external suppliers including writing and preparing briefs for them
– Promoting the audio-visual projects in conjunction with the communication team
– Answering calls for funding, establishing and managing a budget, writing reports
– Developing relationships to identify and engage with new partners
– Preparation and participation to the organization of events
– Updating contact lists.

Qualifications and experience required
– Should have prior experience(s) in project management – ideally cultural – 4 years minimum.
– Good understanding and awareness of South African and French creative industry sector
Work environment, evening/weekend availability, on-call duty:
The work is mainly carried out in the IFAS premises in the Braamfontein area, in Johannesburg, in face-to-face on site, except for constraints related to the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa which may require partial home office.
From time to time, the audiovisual project manager might be required to work evenings or Saturdays to follow up on events (this work outside of normal working hours gives the right to time off).
Travel/assignments:
As part of his/her duties, the audiovisual project manager might be required to travel to Pretoria, where the French Embassy is located, or to go on mission to other cities in South Africa.
Composition of the working team:
IFAS is composed of about 20 people (a COCAC/Director – a Secretary General – a Deputy Secretary General – a Deputy Director/Cultural Attachée – a Regional Audiovisual Attachée – a Scientific Director of IFAS Research – 2 VIAs – 14 local staff, within each department – temporarily, interns).
The audiovisual project manager will report to the Audiovisual Attachée. The department is composed of 2.5 people (Attachée + ½ time VIA + 1 local law agent).
Position open to:
Citizens or permanent residents in South Africa or applicants who are legally in a position to work in South Africa. A valid work permit is compulsory.
Conditions:
Fixed-term renewable 12 months contract with IFAS;
3-month trial period;
Possibility of permanent contract after 2 years of fixed-term contracts;
40 hours a week;
Gross salary: R. 31 335 per month + Benefits: 13th cheque + medical aid and pension fund
Starting period: May or June 2023.
