French Spelling Bee – “Epelle-moi Afrique”

Education

The first edition of the French Spelling Bee – “Epelle-moi Afrique” was held on March 7, 2020 at Crawford International Pretoria, on the occasion of the Francophonie Day. A year later, the second edition took place online and was streamed as part of the Francophonie 2021 celebrations. Both editions were a great success and enthralled the audience.

Organized by the African Spelling Bee Federation and the French Embassy in South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi, the contests involved secondary schools from Pretoria and Johannesburg, pupils from the Pretoria campus of the French high school Jules Verne, and young Francophones from the French-speaking communities of Gauteng.

Building on the success of the previous years, the 2022 edition has taken on a national and international dimension. The event will bring together pupils from all of South Africa’s French schools, as well as nearly 30 schools from Southern Africa. We are delighted to count about 1350 participants, coming from Malawi, Lesotho and South Africa (Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape).

For this third edition, the spelling bee will feature three categories: the Senior Non Francophone category, the Junior Francophone category and the Senior Francophone category which will be introduced for the very first time.

Participation is free of charge and all pedagogical resources are offered to French teachers. A great opportunity for all French learners!
