Regional blue cinema week – Western Cape

From December 6 to December 10, all over the Indian Ocean, French cultural agencies and French embassies involved in the FSPI Indian Ocean Blue Year (2021-2022) are organizing film and documentary screenings with an oceanic focus, for the general public. A week to learn and discuss the role of our oceans and their importance in the daily of millions of citizens. Exceptional images shot under the ocean surface will captivate the public and open debate.

All these events will be part of the “Indian Ocean Blue Year” project, which together with the French Presidency of the Indian Ocean Commission, is organizing this Blue cinema week to raise awareness of the Blue Economy issues in 9 territories bordered by the Indian Ocean (South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Comores, Madagascar, Reunion Island, Maurice, Seychelles).

Activities in South Africa is scheduled as follows:

Iziko Museums / French Consulate – Cape Town, from December 6 to December 10

In collaboration with the Iziko Museums, the French consulate in Cape Town is organizing screenings and talks, for schools, at the Iziko Planetarium. The 8 events will be held from December 6 to 10, with the participation of the Iziko Museums teams and experts. Each session will bring together 40 kids (+ 10 seats open to the general public).

  • December 6, 10am: Screening of Hello World. Welcome by Ms Rooksana Omar (Iziko Museums CEO) and speech by the French Consulate General Laurent Albert.

  • December 6, 2pm: Screening of Planet Ocean. Welcome by Lucky Sithole from Iziko Museums
    Public : South Peninsulat High School and Zwaanswyk High School
  • December 8, 10am: Screening of Out of Plastics and panel discussion. Welcome by Dr Melissa Boonzaaier-Davids from Iziko Museums, introduction to the Marine Science school’s programme by Dr Mariette Wheeler from PHA
    Public : Protea Heights Academy
  • December 8, 2pm: Screening of Out of Plastics. Welcome by Lucky Sithole from Iziko Museums. Screening followed by a visit of the museum
    Public : Emithini Primary school and Sout Peninsula High
  • December 10, 10am: Screening of Rise from the Cape Flat followed by a talk by Mr Shamier Magmoet + screening of Hello World. Welcome by Dr Melissa Boonzaaier-Davids from Iziko Museums
    Public : Helderberg Eco-Rangers and Spine Road High
  • December 10, 2pm: Screening of Rise from the Cape Flat followed by a talk by Mr Shamier Magmoet + screening of Out of Plastics. Welcome by Lucky Sithole from Iziko Museums. Screening followed by a visit of the museum
    Public : Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement (HOAM)
