Audiovisual Archives Training in Southern Africa with INA: Call for interest in Mapping Services 

Context of the project:

As part of funding from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), jointly with the National Audiovisual Institute of France (INA) will implement a large-scale training programme in the audiovisual and film archives sector across 9 countries: Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia. This training programme will consist of a series of online webinars over a two-month period, featuring several industry experts, and – still to be confirmed – will culminate in a face-to-face seminar. Beneficiaries of the programme will be selected through a call for applications and a needs survey.

In order to get a better knowledge of the audiovisual and archival ecosystem in the region, we are looking for potential service providers who could produce a comprehensive mapping of the sector. This would include the following planned activities:

Activity 1: Mapping of audiovisual/archival professionals and public / private institutions in the 9 relevant countries, including main contacts.
Activity 2: Mapping of film collections (public and private) in the 9 relevant countries, including main contacts
Activity 3: Produce a comprehensive questionnaire to identify the needs and select programme beneficiaries

Project requirements:

– Applications will be received until 5 June included and are to be sent to Candice Mailhé : candice.mailhe@frenchinstitute.org.za
– Applications must be detailed and structured as per activities mentioned above
– A good knowledge of the audiovisual/ archival ecosystem of the relevant countries is required
– All audiovisual/archival institutions must be considered, including a special focus on film collections
– The service provider will have to work alongside the project manager at IFAS and the INA team for project directions

Project timeline:

– Mapping finalized on schedule, by July 31st, 2024.
– Questionnaire finalized on schedule, by July 15, 2024.
– Launch of the call for applications by August 6, 2024.
– Online sessions of the training programme from September to November 2024.
– (TBC) Physical seminar gathering all beneficiaries during the first quarter 2025.
